Toys (3 Lessons)

Lesson 1 – In this lesson, children will watch a YouTube video showing two different adverts for the same toy: Moonsand. They will then compare these two adverts using a Venn Diagram and explore how gender is used in advertising. They were created by Let Toys be Toys.

Lesson 2 – In this lesson, the children will make a collage of toys advertised at boys, girls or both boys and girls. They will also discuss how manufacturers can stop creating these gender stereotypes.

Lesson 3 – In this lesson, the children will work together to create an inclusive gender-neutral toy to pitch in a Dragon’s Den style presentation. They will also discuss why it is important for toys to be inclusive and how they as a class can make a difference.

Toys 2 (2 lessons)

Lesson 1 – In this lesson, children will discuss their favourite toys and who they think each toy is suitable for.

Lesson 2 – In this lesson, children will learn about gendered advertising of toys and design gender-neutral alternatives.

Jobs and Careers (1 lesson)

In this lesson, children will explore what is meant by gender and how gender stereotypes appear in jobs and careers. They will then look at how this can be challenged.

What is a scientist? (3 lessons)

Lesson 1 – In this lesson, children will discuss who they picture to be a scientist through drawing this and discussing with others. This lesson aims to help pupils identify gender and stereotype similarities and differences.

Lesson 2 – In this lesson, children will discuss the “Draw-a-Scientist Test” research.

Lesson 3 – In this lesson, children will discuss how the “Draw-a-Scientist Test” reveals gender stereotypes and why stereotypes can be be harmful.

Job Roles without Gender Boundaries (1 lesson)

In this lesson, children will discuss which gendered job titles and how we can change these to be more gender-neutral. They will also discuss how society can make these new titles more familiar and widely used.

Media (2 lessons)

Lesson 1 – Prior to the lesson, children will have watched a sitcom as homework. Together in groups, children will discuss the sitcoms, the characters and whether there are common themes in the shows that they watched. They will also consider the gendered roles the characters played and whether this can be challenged.

Lesson 2 - To expand on the last lesson, the children will be imagining what the sitcom they watched would have been like if their favourite character was the opposite gender. They will also discuss what are traditional and non-traditional roles and how these emerge in advertising.

Gender stereotypes, rights, and jobs (4 lessons)

Lesson 1 – In this lesson, children will learn what is mean by gender and stereotypes and will discuss what they associate with different genders.

Lesson 2 – In this lesson, children will match people to jobs. After seeing the answers, discuss whether they were surprised and if there is anything stopping any gender doing certain jobs.

Lesson 3 – In this lesson, children will learn about children’s rights and will discuss how they have the right to do any job they choose.

Lesson 4 – In this lesson, children will think of a time they felt they were treated differently because of their gender and how it made them feel. They will also talk about action that can be take to ensure everyone is treated fairly and that those who do not fit stereotypes feel accepted.

Fairytales (6 lessons)

Lesson 1 – In this lesson, children will discuss the characters in fairy tales and common themes appearing in stories.

Lesson 2 – In this lesson, children will pick out a significant moment from an assigned fairy tale to act out. Afterwards pupils will try to guess which story is being portrayed.

Lesson 3 – In this lesson, children will take part in the hot seat task where five volunteers will answer questions as a fairy tale character. Together they will discuss common patterns in Fairy Tales.

Lesson 4 – In this lesson, children will discuss different stereotypes in fairy tales and how they might be damaging to people’s expectations.

Lesson 5 – In this lesson, children will rewrite and modernise the fairy tales they were assigned previously.

Lesson 6 – In this lesson, children perform their newly rewritten fairy tales and note stereotypes have been challenged in theirs and others’ stories.

Breaking stereotypes (1 lesson)

In this lesson, children will discuss gender stereotypes, whether they fit them or break them and why they are harmful.
